My Resume Got Me An Interview, But I Didn’t Get The Job . . .

My resume got me an interview, but I didn’t get the job . . . 

My resume was effective.  I’m qualified for the job.  I was prepared for the interview. I arrived on time for the interview. I was dressed right for the interview.  I identified my interviewer’s communication style preferences and believe I communicated effectively.  My reference page was prepared and my references were “at the ready” for a call. I sent a thank you follow-up note and even mentioned I’d like to have the position. 

But. . .

I didn’t get the job.

What am I missing?

Perhaps it was something as minor as the cologne or perfume you wear! 

You never want people to smell you before seeing you and/or continue to smell you long after you leave! Interviewers may not only find the scent to be distracting or offensive, but may be allergic to the ingredients. Don’t take the chance. Avoid wearing perfume or cologne to your job interviews.

Understand Communication Styles, Not Just Communication Devices!

If you are submitting a resume, interviewing for a job, promoting an idea as an employee, or leading a team, it’s important to remember that we now have four distinct generations on the job.  Each generation uses a “different language.” The term “communication skills,” for example, might mean formal writing and speaking abilities to an older worker, while it might mean e-mail and instant-messenger savvy to the younger worker.
